Tales From The Crypt - Saturday 21st August 2021

'I write this sitting in the kitchen sink': obviously I don't, but it's a great opening line - full marks if you know which novel this is the opening sentence of. Sink notwithstanding, a pretty mundane start to the day; I really do need to do something about this. Son #1 and I sat and ate breakfast together, shopping all put away, and had a long discussion about Afghanistan, Zoroastrianism, Islam, Buddhism and the general success (or not) of intervention in the Middle East.  When I get time with my sons (when they aren't asleep, chirpsing, or on video calls with their gfs) we do have interesting discussions about all sorts of things with son #1 having a much a broad knowledge of pre-modern civilisations and religions which put mine to shame. Afterwards I always think I really need to learn more about some of these things, but there's only so much time, or at least there is while I'm working. I made lunch, read the papers and then finally found the time to un...

Love, Poetry and Revolution - Wednesday 26th July 2023

Busy day ahead with an important in-person meeting today, but starting with an unexpected trip to a post office because our local post box is inaccessible, tanks to City Fibre.  I'm wondering if there's anywhere locally that they're not digging? Wheels set in motion. So many alternative plans owing to the complexity of the situation.  Now I just need it all to come together... Tonight we're having our traditional Wednesday night meal and son #3 and I are 'making' it. We ate together and watched the first episode of ' Dreaming Whilst Black ', which was funny and very promising. Roll on the next one. Lots to discuss with Q before putting the bins out in the rain. Tales From the Crypt - St. Valentine's Day (Monday 14th February 2022)

Image
Valentine's day this year is a little unusual for me, both because I have celebrated it early, but also because it is a reminder of how much love a heart (or whatever organ it resides in) can contain. Past, present and future.  It is an awful cliché, while at the same time being true, but there can never be too much. I've all but dispensed with the idea of having a relaxing non-working day as every time I plan one, something occurs that prevents it happening.  Today I will be mostly organising things for my mother-in-law's funeral tomorrow, especially the words I am going to speak on behalf of E, my sons and I. Somewhere in amongst all this we managed a Valentine's day celebration of sorts, with son #2 having organised a card and some presents on behalf of E.  As her communication has decreased over time, the whole thing has become more and more of a formality: it's kind of nice still, but it has lost something along the way and I do this more because we've...

Tales From The Crypt - Monday 28th February 2022

Monday gets off to a great start with a superb breakfast, followed by watching the end the 'Trigger Point' finale, and, surprise surprise, they are planning a second series. After that time to head out  to get some shopping for tonight's dinner, plus a few other essentials including some stuff for pancakes tomorrow night. There's furniture to be delivered this afternoon, sometime between 2 and 5. Just as we settle down for a brief bullet journal interlude, the delivery arrives at around 2:15 pm.  Once the furniture is inside it's time to unpack it and put it where it's planned to go: unfortunately the chest of drawers won't fit up the staircase, so a quick change of plans provides an alternative location.  Once all the items are sorted the chest of drawers looks good in its new location, so hey, result! After the excitement of furniture unpacking and placing, time to prep some of tonight's dinner.  An Aqua exercise class beckons, for one of us at least, ...

Tales From The Crypt - Saturday 13th November 2021

A fairly normal Saturday, though we do have additional guests in the form of son #1 and his gf. That being said, you'd never know it since I'm the only one up, naturally. Most of the day will be taken up in the pursuit of completing the usual set of tedious chores with the added incentive of a trip to the south on Sunday. Late in the afternoon (so technically almost early evening), not long before the final carer visit of the day, we finally all managed to be together to give E the rest of her birthday presents.  Having so many presents at once is a little overwhelming for her, I think, though she obviously was delighted to have her sons with her, even though son #3 was present via video link.  Another birthday over, with reasonable success - next stop the hurdle of Christmas. In the evening we all started watching a movie together, though son #2 left after he'd eaten and seen the start of the film as he planned an evening online with his gf.  So it was left to son #...
