Nine Feet Underground

There's a plan A and a plan B for today, though I think plan A has a probability of 0.5, at the most. Whichever way the day turns out I'm going to have a lie-in and take a gentle start to the day for a change. Plan B it is then.  Plan B is to have a bit of a lazy day.  A few jobs around the house that need doing, but beyond that, I shall find my amusement where I can. Let's see what unfolds. Got a few things done (for example, I finished watching the 'Hemingway' documentary, and I also read some more of the book club book), but essentially it was a day of chilling. Son #3 and I ate dinner together watching a 'Doctor Who' followed by a hilarious episode of 'Derry Girls'. Like dominos toppling, the usual sequence of events followed... A Thursday like any other working Thursday, starting with the arrival of the cleaner.  I managed to go for another 30 minute brisk walk before work which sets me up nicely for a day in front of the work PC. Not much to say other than work, and lots of it. In the evening it was time for the next Idler Drinks with tonight's guest being the actress and improvisor, Pippa Evans. Pippa is an advocate of using improv in all areas of your life, where appropriate, as a way of opening up possibilities. She demonstrated some interesting techniques that can easily be applied and that I will be trying myself, at the earliest opportunity. It was such a positive discussion that I made some decisions about changes I need to make in my life to open up new possibilities for me. Son #1 has departed with friends for an overnight stay in the New Forest before heading off for a walk on the Isle of Wight tomorrow, which means there'll only be three for dinner tonight and we can't start watching a...

After beginning to despair of the new releases this year - not that they were bad, but worse than that much that I've heard has been just OK. Boring. The cardinal sin where music is concerned. You begin to wonder if it's your own frame of mind that's the problem, but then an album comes along that restores your faith. Jane Weaver's new album, 'Modern Kosmology', which tips a nod to both Trish Keenan's Broadcast and also, naturellement, to Laetitia Sadier, as well as krautrock in a broader sense. Nevertheless she is her own person and has her own vision which immediately becomes apparent. 'Did You See Butterflies' builds from an insistent rhythm into a simple guitar riff until the vocals kick in and we are lost into a dreamy vocal swirl that builds and builds into the chorus. Drowning in reverb and echo lost to the intoxicating voice round and round.Bliss... Listen to the album here...
