Strings and Things

I love unexpected or random sounds which contrast or oppose a song’s melody line or riff; sometimes these are deliberate, sometimes perhaps accidental.  One sound I particularly enjoy is the noise made when a guitar player’s finger rubs along the string as they change notes or chords, and that’s why I prefer the Peel Sessions recording of ‘Moon’ by Microdisney.  It’s from their 1984 album, with the ironic if not downright sarcastic title, ‘Everybody is Fantastic’ and is a beguiling but simple song built upon a plodding drum machine pattern and a meandering riff. 

The Peel Session version opens with the sound of fingers and strings and randomly smatters the sound throughout the song.  It’s what brings me back to this song time and again.

Busy day ahead with an important in-person meeting today, but starting with an unexpected trip to a post office because our local post box is inaccessible, tanks to City Fibre.  I'm wondering if there's anywhere locally that they're not digging? Wheels set in motion. So many alternative plans owing to the complexity of the situation.  Now I just need it all to come together... Tonight we're having our traditional Wednesday night meal and son #3 and I are 'making' it. We ate together and watched the first episode of ' Dreaming Whilst Black ', which was funny and very promising. Roll on the next one. Lots to discuss with Q before putting the bins out in the rain. Tales From The Crypt - Saturday 21st August 2021

'I write this sitting in the kitchen sink': obviously I don't, but it's a great opening line - full marks if you know which novel this is the opening sentence of. Sink notwithstanding, a pretty mundane start to the day; I really do need to do something about this. Son #1 and I sat and ate breakfast together, shopping all put away, and had a long discussion about Afghanistan, Zoroastrianism, Islam, Buddhism and the general success (or not) of intervention in the Middle East.  When I get time with my sons (when they aren't asleep, chirpsing, or on video calls with their gfs) we do have interesting discussions about all sorts of things with son #1 having a much a broad knowledge of pre-modern civilisations and religions which put mine to shame. Afterwards I always think I really need to learn more about some of these things, but there's only so much time, or at least there is while I'm working. Tales From The Crypt - Tuesday 8th March 2022

Another early start, which is very beneficial, as I have to drive home again this morning. I have the morning off as annual leave, but still need to be back for work in the afternoon. A good journey back interrupted only by the need to fill up with fuel. Used a lot in the last few days! First, though, I must phone the bank and warn of an unusually large transaction, and not to worry, I am only trying to make some very rich people even richer. Oily-garchs. Getting organised for the rest of the day, primarily work. Need a coffee before I get stuck in to work, then that'll be my focus for the rest of the day. The work, not the coffee, which will soon be gone. Quite an intense afternoon of meetings, but now it's over until tomorrow... Got a bit of a sore throat, so I'm doing an LFT. Can't be too careful. Result negative, but will probably do another tomorrow and maybe again on Thursday. LFT out of the way, I'm making dinner now, planning to sit down and eat with son #2 ...

Tales From The Crypt - Tuesday 14th June 2022

Back to work, after a week of feeling less than human. (No feedback required!) Still not 100%, but I am getting there. It seems odd going back to work for just two days, as I'm on leave from Thursday until the following Tuesday to fully celebrate a couple of special dates, one more personal than the other. I always celebrate the 16th of June every year, but this year it's especially significant as it is the centenary of the publication of the novel in question. I expect I'll have something to say about it in the post I write on the 16th. Looks like a plan is merging for E's return home from hospital, though not quite as soon as I'd have liked. Fingers crossed that this plan becomes a reality. Early evening Q and I have a chat and agree on a revised plan based on E's return home. Disappointingly, I won't get to spend any of the 16th with Q, which may well be a relief for her!!!! Not much more to say because it's a working day, and now only the evening rem...

Tales From the Crypt - St. Valentine's Day (Monday 14th February 2022)

Valentine's day this year is a little unusual for me, both because I have celebrated it early, but also because it is a reminder of how much love a heart (or whatever organ it resides in) can contain. Past, present and future.  It is an awful cliché, while at the same time being true, but there can never be too much. I've all but dispensed with the idea of having a relaxing non-working day as every time I plan one, something occurs that prevents it happening.  Today I will be mostly organising things for my mother-in-law's funeral tomorrow, especially the words I am going to speak on behalf of E, my sons and I. Somewhere in amongst all this we managed a Valentine's day celebration of sorts, with son #2 having organised a card and some presents on behalf of E.  As her communication has decreased over time, the whole thing has become more and more of a formality: it's kind of nice still, but it has lost something along the way and I do this more because we've...
