"Feeling Like I'm Riding With The Four Horsemen"


Drum beat kicks, sampled string section weaves its dreamy melody in and out of focus over a lurching slow drum pattern and the mantra "It's Seven, It's Heavy, It's Heaven" leads in to the gloriously addictive hypnotic chorus.

 Brain hooked after four chorus repeats that gyrate and wind like a snake charmer dancer sending ripples through a smoke-filled room.  The rap begins it's roller coaster ride with phrases merging into phrases before we hit the chorus running again and back to the dancer's sinuous moves. A melancholy fadeout as the rap and strings hit the wall...exhale.
Shabazz Palaces look at America ("Amurderca" in Quazarz-speak) through an alien lens on their pair of albums - 'Quazarz: Born On A Gangster Star' and 'Quazarz vs. The Jealous Machines' - both released on the 14th July is a breath of fresh air, a singular rap vision to be celebrated.

I could write a lot today, but I am not planning to.  Why am I bothering to write at all, you may ask?  Purely because of the date.  The twenty-ninth of February only comes every four years (yes, I know there are exceptions to that rule - I have written code to deal with that in the past), when it's a leap year.  I feel, for no apparent reason, I should mark this day with some words. It's starting to look a lot like E's decline has plateaued and we (the Sue Ryder nurse, maybe GP) may well decide to change the way medication is delivered.  We'll not stop giving her medication to reduce the likelihood of seizures, nor will we stop the pain-relief medication because I think everyone that knows agrees there is no turning back from that. Respite.  That's what I need, though as yet it's not easy to arrange. Maybe that will become a possibility next week. Love, Poetry and Revolution - Monday 12th February 2024

After eighteen months of stability, it's been a while since the focus of these posts has been E, though that hasn't been the case in real life, of course. This past week has been very troubling with the onset of seemingly regular small seizures.  From our perspective we've been struggling to know if E's in pain and/or suffering discomfort, but increasingly there have been signs that she is. This morning I called the District Nurses to explain my concerns.  Whilst the nurse was here, E had several mini-seizures, and the nurse saw these and validated what I've been seeing. E needed pain killer and relaxant and she seems more settled, though there are still signs of seizures even with the medication. The nurse is going to contact both the Sue Ryder nurse and the GP, so I guess we'll have to wait to see what the next steps are. Love, Poetry and Revolution - Friday 16th August 2024

August starts with son #3's birthday.  We celebrated with a meal at a local Thai restaurant, even though a salad had attempted to poison me the night before.  Hard as nails, me! Q joined us for the weekend and then the three of us headed back to Liverpool for a week to give son #3 a break from caring responsibilities, especially while son #2 was in Costa Rica and son #1 was away with his gf. We had a great week, including a tiring day walking at Malham and meals with my big sister and her husband in Saltaire and my brother-in-law and his wife in the 'pool. Family is key. Since returning dahn sarf, I've started, with the help of the dudes a big clearout of crap we no longer use/need.  I have begun the process of sorting through E's stuff, which is long overdue.  E has a huge collection of shoes, boots and clothes and it's hard to know where to begin.  I guess the biggest challenge is accepting that she'll never need any of these things again.  Especially whe...

Lockdown Diary - Tuesday 13th October 2020

Back to work! There are a whole host of deliveries due today, from feed supplies for my wife, a book for my son at uni and birthday presents for the twins. I'm also due at the GP surgery for a flu jab at 11:16 precisely! Not only that but 'our' electrician is coming to replace the two extractor fans in the bathrooms: the one in the en-suite is dead and, given both are over 27 years old, I thought it best to replace that one before it dies too. I'm hoping there's not too much non-electrical work to do, as he's not  big fan (!) of that. The electrician arrived at around 9:30, just after the morning carers started their tasks, so it was all a bit hectic with coming and goings through the front door whilst the carers were washing my wife's hair in bed. My wife's bedroom is directly opposite the front door and the bathroom they use is by the door, so it was all a little fraught 'til the electrician had got all his tools and stuff in. Dreadzone at SUB89 in Reading Friday 7th April 2017

Back to SUB89 and also to Dreadzone after a semi-enforced break, on a Friday night and accompanied by my sons - "Dreadzone virgins" in the words of MC Spee: sounds like the setting for a great night out... ...and so it proved to be! There was no support act though Greg Dread (Greg Roberts, drummer) played a DJ set prior to Dreadzone taking to the stage - a gentle warm up for what was to follow.  The band took to the stage to cheers and applause and launched straight into 'Rootsman' from the new album, a great reggae-based opener that led neatly into MC Spee's intro for 'Return of the Dread' - and already the "bouncing crew" was in full sway. Dreadzone are a joyous band live - it's impossible not to dance - and I for one had a grin from ear to ear whilst dancing for the entire two hour set.
