Every waking moment there’s some tune or other sinuously snaking between, through and round my thoughts, frequently bubbling to the surface like…well, like bubbles surfacing.

Three songs have been chasing their tails through my neural pathways this week and they’ve now broken out and surfaced in this playlist…

Tales From The Crypt - Remembrance Sunday (13th November 2022)

I'm still suffering with lower back pain, though just to be awkward it's now on the left hand side rather than the right.  The answer is movement and (prescription/over the counter) drugs. I'm planning to  get in touch with friends and family for chats, doing the usual boring chores, hopefully going for a brief walk and reading at least some of the papers. Just before midday I managed to have a chat with my big sister (she will forever be thus-named), which was good.  It's strange that as family shrinks, you get closer to those that remain.  Over the past decade or so, I've been closer to both my sisters than ever before. We grew up almost as distant planets from one another and from our parents, to some extent, though we do have shared memories, good and bad. The sun appears to be coming out and so is my washing. Love, Poetry and Revolution - Thursday 17th October 2024

The longer things stay the same, the more it seems that's the way they'll stay. No longer? Ever since returning from hospital some three years ago, and her brush with death whilst there, E's illness has followed a familiar and consistent pattern. Brief intense periods of illness (infections, seizures, that sort of thing) followed by longer periods of slow, continuous decline. Latterly she's been experiencing other symptoms, most especially bouts of pain of unknown origin.  When she's been in pain, it's often been associated with mild seizures which pass in a minute or two, with help. E is in an end-of-life care period during which comfort is the priority, which can throw up unexpected challenges. Her pain medication has been increased, but she still experiences pain at times. It's a bit of a challenge. On the one hand, we don't want her to be in pain, on the other it's hard to know how long the pain will last and we don't want to rush in and give...

Lockdown Diary - Monday 4th January 2021

Great start to the day! Not! Despite various stretching exercises over the weekend, I have not managed to shift my lower back pain.  I think I injured it a few days ago when I helped the early morning carer (when there is only one) move my wife and in the process broke two golden rules about lifting.  So now I pay the price - that'll teach me. The main consequence of the lower back pain, apart from the pain itself, is that I can't do yoga. I've tried a few forward folds and it ain't good. Damn!  I shall really miss it today, though hopefully I can take a class on another day in the week, assuming I keep up the stretches and exercises and get it better.  It's also put paid to my press ups and weight lifts as I don't want to aggravate it further.  Usually I try and ignore it and make it worse - one thing yoga has taught me is to be a bit more in touch with how my body feels, so I don't wreck it. (Apparently there are no spares as it's a discontinued model)...

Lockdown Diary - Saturday 2nd January 2021

The third day of 2021 ushers in a return to all the mundane things that quotidian life has to offer. Given the insane covid numbers that are now being recorded - apparently worse than the peak back in March/April - we're going to get shopping done and out of the way before it gets busy.  Son #2 and I get it done without any fuss and even a trip to the pharmacy to pick up my meds is achieved without encountering any other customer.  That's the best sort of shopping at the moment. Saturday morning unfolds as any other Saturday for the past nine or ten months, with only conversations with the carers and postie bringing any real colour. After a late-ish lunch I have got most of the tedious tasks complete and so I find time to read the papers. Son #2 is with me, revising for a Microsoft Azure exam on Monday.  Apart from the odd question about security principals and landing zones, I read uninterrupted. Lockdown Diary - Tuesday 12th January 2021

Work today with the added excitement of a trip to the doctor's surgery to liven it up a bit. Work is busy at the moment, though I'm finding it quite interesting as I'm having to learning about and understand all my client's systems - what they do, how they fit together etc - and as it's a retailer I can also relate what happens in the real world with what happens in the systems as a consequence. It's very complex, which adds to the interest. I get a great deal of pleasure from understanding complexity, especially where you can relate the real world, macro level view to the micro level.  It's why I enjoy meteorology, it's why I enjoyed being an IBM Mainframe systems programmer and Assembler programming, why I liked debugging and tuning CICS systems and, in a non-work sense, why I find 'Finnegans Wake' endlessly enjoyable and fascinating.
