Love, Poetry and Revolution - Tuesday 9th April 2024

We're well into April, but this is my first post.  Why?  Choose one from the following list: Couldn't be bothered; Abducted by aliens; Busy 'doing' life; or,  all of the above.

Since my last post I've spent a few days in my adopted second home of Liverpool.  During this stay, Q and I went and saw a celebration of the songs of Lennon & McCartney called 'Come Together', watched the film 'Wicked Little Letters' at the Everyman cinema, and saw Say She She live at Hangar 34. That's retirement! (To be sung and crowbar-ed into 'That's Entertainment' by The Jam. Give it a go, it doesn't really fit, but if you try hard enough...)

'Come Together' was well-performed and, a times, funny, though it did play fast and loose with the facts.  In particular, I'm damn sure they implied that 'Abbey Road' was recorded AFTER 'Let It Be', which it clearly wasn't.  Not only that, but the linking segments omitted all mention of Yoko, Linda, George Harrison or Allen Klein, to name but a few. I suppose it wasn't meant to be a history, though criminally the songs played did not include 'Norwegian Wood' or barely anything (nothing?) from the best album, 'Revolver'. (Controversy!!)  You really should sit through Peter Jackson's epic 'Get Back' to get candid views of the band members and their creative processes. For the final word, ending on a positive note, the re-creation of the final rooftop gig captured something.

There's not much I can say about 'Wicked Little Letters' other than it was well-acted, hilarious, full of expletives, and fascinatingly, based on a true story (though much had been changed).  You just have to see it!  (N.B. There is a book written about the real case, titled 'The Littlehampton Libels'.  I've added it to my reading list.)

Say She She were brilliant. The three women are great singers and they have a phenomenally good band. The whole gig was a joy from start to finish.  I even danced. (There's video evidence, which will never see the light of day.)  A few photos below...

Since then I've socialised with friends a few times and been out clothes shopping.  There's always more.

News about E?  Well, there are two sides to this. She seems to be recovering a little, which has its pros and cons for all concerned, not least of all E.  After my counselling at Sue Ryder, I've also decided that we, and me in particular, just have to get on with our lives.  We'll try to be there when E passes (it's a 'when' more than an 'if'), but no one is to feel guilty if they aren't there when it happens. Whatever you think about that, you need to spend some time in our shoes before you draw conclusions. None of this is undertaken lightly.

On we go...
