Love, Poetry and Revolution - Wednesday 28th August 2024

I'm spending this week in Liverpool with Q, as she has a week's leave before getting back into the craziness of the new University term. The week being subject to the usual caveats.

There are signs that things may be happening to E at home, and if the indications continue, I will have to press the Sue Ryder nurses for action. It goes without saying that if things change I will return home.

Against this backdrop, we are planning several things, including Christmas.  It is hard to think about Christmas now, but we'll probably spend it in a rented property, to accommodate family. Cats.  Herding.  And a cat, maybe.

Yesterday was a day of drama down south, luckily today things seem to have settled down.

One achievement has been the completion of the playlist for the school reunion in September. It clocks in at 19 hours and should include something for everyone, though I have excised several personal favourites ('under orders') and concentrated on the singles charts from 1969 to 1976.

I shall avoid that here now, though.

We've had a busy week in Liverpool, starting with a gig in Manchester and then in Liverpool.  Let's start in Manchester.  We went to the new Co-Op Live Arena to see Crowded House.  They are at one extreme of the spectrum of music I usually enjoy, but I was going there with an open mind.  Q is a fan, and the next night we are going to a gig by someone I like, who Q has never heard of.  Back to Co-Op Live. I've got to say I wasn't impressed with the place. It's billed as having 32 restaurants, using local produce. How many does it have? None. Not a single one.  The place is still not finished. As it has no restaurants, it also has no loos unless you go inside. Which you can't do until they open up for the gig.  Manchester City to the rescue.  There are some portakabin-style loos a five to ten-minute walk from the venue. Takes From The Crypt - Tuesday 28th December 2021

Another lie-in until 7, this could become a habit or rather, it would be nice if it could, but I fear the need to work may stop me adopting it. It's going to be a relatively chilled day, though as usual I have a fair few chores to do.  Amongst all of that I intend to find time to chat with a friend and, ideally, go for a walk.  I really do need to get back (!!) into exercise again. Discussion with the carers about their New Year's Eve party and whether it will go ahead. Mixed feelings. Talking of 'Get Back', I watched more of the Beatles documentary at lunch time and it's interesting to see the tensions between George and Paul and most noticeably between John and Paul - the cracks are showing and it seems hard to imagine Lennon and McCartney as a song writing duo. Eventually an album will emerge, but it will prove to be their last and the band will break up soon after the album's release.  Some of the ideas they are playing around with seem really weak, uninspir

Lockdown Diary - Sunday 20th December 2020

Sunday gets off to a slow start, which is the way I like it.  Slower than usual after yesterday's latest announcements. Carers are running a bit later than usual, so I've finished my breakfast before they arrive.  Car problems! After breakfast the usual chores take centre stage.  After lunch I decide to go and hand deliver some of the Christmas cards I can easily on foot.  Exercise and another one less thing I've not done. When I return from my delivery round, I start wrapping the remaining presents for the carers - a lot of it in the form of alcohol - as I plan to start handing it out tomorrow. Late afternoon I sit down with son #2 for a chat and to watch the end of a film together - I think he's watching it out of nostalgia as it's a film from his childhood.  I happily watch it with him as we don't often just sit and chill together. Tales From The Crypt - Saturday 12th March and Sunday 13th March 2022

Another two day post, written entirely after the events! Saturday started in the usual way though with the added excitement that the rest of the day is contingent on two lateral flow test results.  Luckily both are negative and so I'm heading south as soon as I can finish packing. Arrived to a warm welcome, which begins with some lunch.  Given both of us have been a little under the weather, we're going to have a chilled day, beginning with some episodes of 'Married At First Sight - Australia'.  In particular I am suffering with a case of coleslaw, which is somewhat limiting, but hey, ho! Let's go! (With apologies to the Ramones) Q decides to make a lemon and blueberry cake so, that's next on the agenda. 'MAFS-A' is not something I would typically watch, I must confess, however it does offer some useful discussion points and conversations, as well as showing lots of scenes of Sydney and  more.  Fascinating. Todd Rundgren ‘State’ Tour – O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire 15th Jun 2013

I’ve been a fan of Todd Rundgren’s music since I first heard a track from ‘Initiation’ on Alan Freeman’s Saturday afternoon Radio 1 rock show way back when. Nevertheless I’ve never seen him play live, so when I heard he was going to play the UK in support of his new album ‘State’, I knew I had to get tickets. Better still the London gig was to be at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire which has been a favourite venue of mine after seeing quite a few memorable gigs there over the years.   Best of all this was an opportunity to take my teenage sons to their first gig, even if the choice of artist was mine rather than theirs.   ‘State’ is an album of electronic, dance-music/DJ inspired songs, so it was probably the best way into Todd’s music for them. There was no support act, at a little after 8pm Prairie Prince (drums) and Jesse Gress (guitar) took to the stage setting up the intro to Imagination the first track from ‘State’.
