Love, Poetry and Revolution - Monday 31st July 2023

Another one of those busy non-working days.  Sometimes there seems to be so much to organise meaning that I never get around to those simple things this extra is meant for, like reading the papers.

There was a brief interlude whilst I took son #1 to and from the dentist and a trip to the post office (two actually, as one was shut because the 'system is updating' - can't that be done outside opening hours??)

The evening came around and it was back into the usual cooking dinner routine.   We never became quorate for dinner and so we didn't end up watching anything in particular other live quizzes on BBC2.

I think the Stranglers said it first.

The longer things stay the same, the more it seems that's the way they'll stay. No longer? Ever since returning from hospital some three years ago, and her brush with death whilst there, E's illness has followed a familiar and consistent pattern. Brief intense periods of illness (infections, seizures, that sort of thing) followed by longer periods of slow, continuous decline. Latterly she's been experiencing other symptoms, most especially bouts of pain of unknown origin.  When she's been in pain, it's often been associated with mild seizures which pass in a minute or two, with help. E is in an end-of-life care period during which comfort is the priority, which can throw up unexpected challenges. Her pain medication has been increased, but she still experiences pain at times. It's a bit of a challenge. On the one hand, we don't want her to be in pain, on the other it's hard to know how long the pain will last and we don't want to rush in and give...

Not quite My Favourite Albums of 2019

This has been a long time in the making, but finally, almost a month into 2019, I've almost listened to all the albums I have from 2018.  If I don't complete this look back soon it'll be overtaken by the new albums from 2019 - and there already are some great albums from January and even more promised in February. (I should also add that albums I missed in 2018 are still being brought to my attention, this includes albums by Jonathan Wilson ('Rare Birds'), Steve Gunn ('The Unseen In Between') and Rezzett ('Rezzett LP')). Before I get into the top ten list I ought to say something about the albums that haven't made the list.  That's the subject of this post. Honourable mentions I guess you'd call these.  There were a lot of good albums in 2018, many of which contain 4 or 5 great songs or tunes, often including a smattering of other good tracks but, ultimately not enough to make the top 10. Lockdown Diary - Wednesday 27th May 2020

Up bang on 6am and started getting organised for yoga at 7. There's also some online food shopping admin that has to be done and by the time I've done that and got set up for online yoga, there's no time to walk first.  I'll either have to squeeze that in later or skip it until tomorrow. Yoga was the usual 30 minutes of breathing followed by salute the sun - today we hit the 20 minute milestone, well on the way to being ready to do 30 minutes on the morning of the Summer Solstice.  I've noticed that's a Sunday, which means I'll have to get up early on a Sunday for once. This is what I call dedication (or it will be if I do it!) Fun and frolics over, time for a shower, then work... ...which has occupied the bulk of the hours of the day, so far (it's just gone 4pm), apart from a brief break to flush my wife's catheter (two attempts, second one successful) and to meditate. Perhaps this blog should have been titled 'Todd Rundgren Live at Hammersmith Apollo, London, 6th April 2019', which would be factually correct, if a little dull. "Before we go any further" (see foot of article) I should declare something: I am a huge Todd Rundgren fan and have been since the early 1970s.  Many fans think "Todd is God" and refer to themselves as "Todd-heads", however my love of his songs and music is not quite so fanatical.  He's made stuff I really can't get in to,  there are whole albums - especially between 'Hermit of Mink Hollow' (1978) and 'Almost Human' (1989) - which either contain no tracks I like or maybe one, perhaps two at a pinch, and occasionally something I hate (witness 'Bang the Drum All Day'). Tales From The Crypt - Friday 14th January 2022

It's Friday again and another working day! Lots to do and organise, especially work-wise, so the usual rules apply. Managed to keep up the walking, which was good, despite it being even colder and frostier this morning.    After work I did a lateral flow test which was negative, after which I had a long chat with my younger sister, the first of 2022, which was a good catch-up. I made dinner and then watched more of the final part of 'Get Back', which continues to be fascinating and we're starting to see some pulling in different directions with George wanting to release a solo album of songs he's written and John meeting Allen Klein, then introducing him to the band.  John seems mighty impressed with Klein, though hindsight shows he was less than honest.
