Love, Poetry and Revolution - Monday 31st July 2023

Another one of those busy non-working days.  Sometimes there seems to be so much to organise meaning that I never get around to those simple things this extra is meant for, like reading the papers.

There was a brief interlude whilst I took son #1 to and from the dentist and a trip to the post office (two actually, as one was shut because the 'system is updating' - can't that be done outside opening hours??)

The evening came around and it was back into the usual cooking dinner routine.   We never became quorate for dinner and so we didn't end up watching anything in particular other live quizzes on BBC2.

I think the Stranglers said it first.

Dreadzone at SUB89 in Reading Friday 7th April 2017

Back to SUB89 and also to Dreadzone after a semi-enforced break, on a Friday night and accompanied by my sons - "Dreadzone virgins" in the words of MC Spee: sounds like the setting for a great night out... ...and so it proved to be! There was no support act though Greg Dread (Greg Roberts, drummer) played a DJ set prior to Dreadzone taking to the stage - a gentle warm up for what was to follow.  The band took to the stage to cheers and applause and launched straight into 'Rootsman' from the new album, a great reggae-based opener that led neatly into MC Spee's intro for 'Return of the Dread' - and already the "bouncing crew" was in full sway. Dreadzone are a joyous band live - it's impossible not to dance - and I for one had a grin from ear to ear whilst dancing for the entire two hour set. New Song

I have a confused relationship with the music of Warpaint.  Art its best their music has an unfocused quality with a submerged bass sound, heavily rhythmic married to unusual vocal harmonies. I love this dreamlike style, but it's one which, for me at least, they haven't quite managed to fully realise on album. I was originally drawn to them by the song 'Undertow' from their debut album 'The Fool' which encapsulates that underplayed woozy style. The follow-up album simply titled 'Warpaint' further emphasised that dream-like quality to their writing and playing. In spite of this the second album didn't quite deliver what it promised for me, though I do find the superimposed images of the cover especially good :-) 'Warpaint' also resulted in the release of a video coupling two of its tracks, namely 'Disco//Very' and 'Keep It Healthy', which includes some rather hypnotic dancing by Jenny Lee Lindberg! ...

Lockdown Diary - Bloomsday (Wednesday 16th June 2021)

It is, as the title says, Bloomsday, the annual celebration of James Joyce's novel, 'Ulysses', the action of which (more or less) all takes place in Dublin on the 16th June (though originally in 1904).  Although I cannot be in Dublin (nor can others, excepting those who live there) this year, I am still trying to celebrate, despite the limitations that having to work on this day place on me.  Next year 'Ulysses' will be 100, so it would be the perfect year to go to Dublin for Bloomsday, though it's probably booked up already or won't happen due to COVID or one of my many imponderables will strike, preventing me from going. I shall investigate. Early morning call with Talking Therapies and they agree with what I'd suggested last week, the only problem being there is an 8 week waiting list for counselling. Lockdown Diary - Saturday 28th March 2020

Been shopping for the first time since last weekend and only the second time I've been out in a week - went for a run on Monday.  Despite good intentions, work has kept me so busy during the days that I've not even managed to squeeze in a walk the rest of the week: by the time I've stopped work it's been getting dark and, to my shame, I couldn't be arsed. Next week, I've promised myself I'll do better. Gonna put something in my work Outlook calendar each day so I do some walking. (I have been exercising every day though: press-ups and weights which is better than nowt, I guess) Did my first Zoom-hosted Yoga class on Thursday evening, which was an experiment by our Yoga teacher.  It was successful, though very odd to be adopting the tree pose in the living room while watching it on the laptop.  This is going to start in earnest next week, so it'll be back to Yoga at 10am on Monday, except no need to leave the house first. Love, Poetry and Revolution - Friday 11th August 2023

Whatever happened to Thursday's blog post? You may well ask, or perhaps you haven't noticed and/or don't give a monkey's? Either way, this omission marks a change of approach to the blog. I've decided that for me at least, the blog has become a bit dull. Feeling that I have to write something regardless of whether there's anything worth saying and also holding myself to the expectation that I write every day, no longer suits the way my life is changing. So, henceforth I am not necessarily going to post every day, which will hopefully result in more interesting (??) posts. There may even be a shift in emphasis, that's something I'm mulling over. Friday started well and ended with a trip to Speke to watch 'Barbie' preceded by dinner at Nando's.  What did I think of the film? It's not going to enter my list of favourite films of all time, however, it was funny and I enjoyed it, in spite of the dance numbers.  I liked the opening 2001 spoof, ...
