Love, Poetry and Revolution - Sunday 6th August 2023

We have a day of sightseeing around Liverpool planned for the day, starting with brunch somewhere new.

As I'm going to be busy 'doing it', this will be a short blog, almost entirely written after the event.

Brunch was brilliant: I had crab-based eggs benedict, which was excellent. There aren't many better breakfasts to start a day.

After brunch, we headed for the Albert Dock and thence to the Pier Head for a series of photo opportunities with the Fab Four statue.  This was the start of a Beatles-themed tour - the next stop being The Cavern Club where we enjoyed alcoholic refreshments and music.  The guy singing and playing the guitar had some great anecdotes about the Cavern, with some excellent guitar skills on his rendition of 'Norwegian Wood'.

The 'tour' then took in John Lennon's home on Menlove Avenue and Paul's home, along with Penny Lane, Eleanor Rigby's grave and a Strawberry Fields drive by. Many photographs were taken.

Home via the shops for a mega curry meal courtesy of M&S.

Lockdown Diary - Good Friday (Friday 2nd April 2021)

It may be Good Friday, but it's actually going to be like any other Friday without work.  You can take it as read that all the usual things happened.  Nothing out of the ordinary. At some point in the day I sat down and read a chunk more of  'Hawkwind: Days Of The Underground: Radical Escapism in the Age Of Paranoia'.  It only covers the hey-day of the band up until 1980's album 'Levitation' and I'm now in the final sections with only the period from late 1978 to 1980 left to read, which is about 100 pages.  I have so much I want to read that it would be good to finish it before starting the next book club book. After reading, I briefly listened to some Hawkwind from the Hawklords to 'Levitation' period as it's a period I don't know that well as I was heavily into punk and new wave at the time and didn't listen to it.  Whenever I have heard any of it I haven't been that impressed either.  On listening to it now I've discovered tha...

Dreadzone at SUB89 in Reading Friday 7th April 2017

Back to SUB89 and also to Dreadzone after a semi-enforced break, on a Friday night and accompanied by my sons - "Dreadzone virgins" in the words of MC Spee: sounds like the setting for a great night out... ...and so it proved to be! There was no support act though Greg Dread (Greg Roberts, drummer) played a DJ set prior to Dreadzone taking to the stage - a gentle warm up for what was to follow.  The band took to the stage to cheers and applause and launched straight into 'Rootsman' from the new album, a great reggae-based opener that led neatly into MC Spee's intro for 'Return of the Dread' - and already the "bouncing crew" was in full sway. Dreadzone are a joyous band live - it's impossible not to dance - and I for one had a grin from ear to ear whilst dancing for the entire two hour set. Love, Poetry and Revolution - Monday 12th February 2024

After eighteen months of stability, it's been a while since the focus of these posts has been E, though that hasn't been the case in real life, of course. This past week has been very troubling with the onset of seemingly regular small seizures.  From our perspective we've been struggling to know if E's in pain and/or suffering discomfort, but increasingly there have been signs that she is. This morning I called the District Nurses to explain my concerns.  Whilst the nurse was here, E had several mini-seizures, and the nurse saw these and validated what I've been seeing. E needed pain killer and relaxant and she seems more settled, though there are still signs of seizures even with the medication. The nurse is going to contact both the Sue Ryder nurse and the GP, so I guess we'll have to wait to see what the next steps are. Tales From The Crypt - Friday 9th September 2022

Later today I'm off to the airport to meet Q and travel with her down to the south coast. Before then I'll be watching her flight travelling from Doha to the UK in between getting a few things done, such as a quick shopping trip and some clothes washing. I don't think I'll be writing much here as I'll be travelling for a fair chunk of the day. No day is complete without a call about E, and today it was the neuro-rehab consultant's PA wanting to arrange a consultant visit. There was mention of Botox, at which point I did explain the change in E's condition. Nevertheless, the PA still arranged the visit for next week, though I don't there's any point in wasting money on Botox. All the jobs are done, including packing for the weekend, and so once I hear from Q to let me know she's waiting for her luggage, I'll be heading off.
