Lockdown Diary - Thursday 4th February 2021
Thursday in a very busy working week, not much to say except, work will dominate the day.
And, lo! It came to pass that work moved among us and the day it did dominate.
Thursday usually has the saving grace of the Idler drinks Zoom chat. Tonight's session is titled 'Poetry Night' and features poet and novelist Salena Godden (who's just published what looks to be a very interesting novel called 'Mrs Death Misses Death') and Idler resident poet (and editor of the journal 'Modern Poetry in Translation'), Clare Pollard.
Another great Zoom session in which Selena Godden read a couple of excerpts from 'Mrs Death...', which is both dark and comic, a combination I generally can't resist. If you'd like to read an excerpt, you can find one here.
Dinner tonight will be smoky pork and Boston beans, which is a recipe we've made before, and has the advantage of having relatively little prep and cooks in one pot. Coat the meat in a sauce you make and mix the rest of the ingredients in the dish then add the meat and cook for 40 minutes. After a long day staring at a screen, this sort of simplicity is what's needed.
We gather together to eat and watch 'Mr. Robot', then no sooner have we gathered but it's time to part to the different wings of the manor (i.e. everyone returns to their bedrooms, three out of four of us to partake in PC video games and shouting. (Shouting being one of skills you must acquire to take part in PC games online, apparently. Judicious use of obscenities is also a prerequisite. Who knew?))
I was just thinking it was about time there was some new stuff from Hollie Cook and I discover that she's singing on a new track from Gentlemen's Dub Club titled 'Honey', which is from their forthcoming album 'Down To Earth'. Until she releases a new album of her own, this is a pretty good substitute.
