Tales From The Crypt - Tuesday 18th January 2022

After yesterday's unplanned office reorg, returning to work today seemed like a break!

Nevertheless, the day will be very busy as I have a lot of meetings and things to complete, so there won't be a lot written here, I suspect.

The office reorg has made working from home much easier, which I'm really pleased about. It's probably the onset of madness but I've also planned to reorganise the cupboard under the stairs with some new shelves and another clear out. Enough of that!

I am still keeping up my walking schedule this week and will hopefully continue to do so, though the onset of darkness and work make this challenging at times.

I made dinner and ate it while watching the last 30 minutes of 'Get Back', which seemed to fizzle out rather than end. It felt like it needed a commentary on what happened next as a closing section, but overall it was fascinating and well worth eight-plus hours of my time.

...and again the day ended in the way it often does...

It's been a while since my last post, longer than I anticipated when I decided I didn't need to post daily. Since then, which was a little over a week ago, a lot has happened though quite a lot of it can't appear here. Work has been especially busy as my work on the project is coming to an end.  Unusually, design uncertainties are increasing rather than decreasing as things wind down, which means I am doubly busy with new stuff as well as trying to ensure I wrap up and tidy all my documentation. There's been lots of monitoring activity keeping me busy while I get to grips with the joys of SDR.  It's opened up a world of possibilities that inevitably come with new challenges including the need for better antenna or better-sited (higher, outdoor) antenna and RF filters on top of the RF amplifiers I've also required. This week I have mostly been listening to....

I’ve been listening to ‘Trout Mask Replica’ by Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band’s for the past couple of days. Although it’s one of my favourite albums, certainly a desert island candidate, I’ve actually been listening to a new release of the album issued from the record label set up by Frank Zappa’s estate. Why a new release?   Is it a multi-disc release with lavish notes, out-takes, demo versions, recordings of the musicians asleep and imagining how to arrange ‘Veteran’s Day Poppy’? No, none of the above; it is a single CD release of the original album. What’s special is that it’s an almost completely re-mastered version of the album, taken from different set of source tapes which, in the most part, have not suffered from the oxide loss and deterioration of the Warner Brothers master. Tales From The Crypt - Thursday 7th October 2021

As you may have noticed there have been no posts since Sunday, primarily because I've been away getting some necessary respite, my first since August 2019.  I had thought I might write something whilst I was away - I took a laptop - but in the event I needed total escape and couldn't summon the motivation to start a laptop. This post will therefore be a catch-up, albeit a very limited and summarised one. In fact that is the summary: events have taken a turn such that I've driven for four and half hours and am now waiting for an emergency ambulance to arrive to take my wife (accompanied by me) to hospital.  Luckily I managed to enlist the help of the Community Matron and we now know that my wife is suffering from sepsis and needs to be on a IV drip for both antibiotics and saline. Wizards of Oz

Great news! Almost 5 years after their last compilation album Amorphous Androgynous have announced the fourth volume in their brain-mashing ‘A Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble (Exploding in Your Mind)’ series.  Subtitled ‘Wizards of Oz’ the latest volume’s name provides a clue to the contents – and no, before you suggest it, it has nothing to do with a similarly-titled film. Due for release on the 23 rd March ‘Wizards of Oz’, like its predecessors is a 2-CD continuous mix of cosmic space music but this time focused on music from Australia and New Zealand.  In part the Australian bias is probably in response to the success of bands like Tame Impala and Pond (both of which feature in the mix), though there are plenty of names new to these ears.  Let’s hope this compilation is as strong as the three volumes that preceded it! Tales From The Crypt - Tuesday 25th January 2022

When a man is tired of cake, he is tired of life, or something like that. (With apologies to Dr Samuel Johnson) That four letter word beginning with 'w' and ending 'k' dominates the day. Worse still it does seem to be having a detrimental effect on my eyesight, if not my palms. A plan for the week is currently emerging: take car to garage early tomorrow to get AdBlue topped up, and maybe hopefully get the tyres checked and replaced while they're at it. ('The Dog, The Dog...'); Thursday will be final Talking Therapies counselling session, a sort of 'mopping up' exercise (see earlier! (Only kidding!)) with Friday assigned to collecting my latest batch of meds. Unfortunately the earliest eye appointment I can get is the 9th February but at least it's in the diary.
