Tales From The Crypt - Tuesday 18th January 2022

After yesterday's unplanned office reorg, returning to work today seemed like a break!

Nevertheless, the day will be very busy as I have a lot of meetings and things to complete, so there won't be a lot written here, I suspect.

The office reorg has made working from home much easier, which I'm really pleased about. It's probably the onset of madness but I've also planned to reorganise the cupboard under the stairs with some new shelves and another clear out. Enough of that!

I am still keeping up my walking schedule this week and will hopefully continue to do so, though the onset of darkness and work make this challenging at times.

I made dinner and ate it while watching the last 30 minutes of 'Get Back', which seemed to fizzle out rather than end. It felt like it needed a commentary on what happened next as a closing section, but overall it was fascinating and well worth eight-plus hours of my time.

...and again the day ended in the way it often does...

Carpe Diem There is much encouragement from society to make the most of every day. Identify the small things that bring pleasure. Be grateful for what you have, not what you lack or desire. This is all sensible advice, but we can't be exploring a new part of the world every day.  Jumping out of planes (with parachutes, ofc), flying at 500 knots through the Machynnleth loop in the backseat of an F15E at 250 feet above the ground. Gradually, day-to-day life imposes its mundane aspects on us and the possibility of living each day as if it will be our last soon fades away.  It would be too exhausting and become rather tedious.  We find pleasure in the people and activities we love, or go mad. Sometimes life intervenes and is determined to slap us around the face with a wet fish to remind us of our mortality. But there are escapes... For about a week, maybe more, I've had a cold.  It's one of those colds that refuses to go quickly. I have shared it widely, unintentionally, though of course, I may not be the source of all the colds, there are so many about. I'm not here to write about my cold, though. It's a lead-in to something more pernicious. Accompanying the cold, especially as it slowly fades, I've had a bad headache. Initially, I thought it was cold-related, but I've come to believe it's a physical manifestation of stress - a topic that opens a crate of cans of worms. The stress I'm experiencing is probably the result of several things I'm anxious about. I had considered listing the things I thought were at the root of it, and then deciding whether they belong in the category of things I can control or cannot control. Love, Poetry and Revolution - Wednesday 24th July 2024

The last three weeks have been fun-filled, starting with the Idler festival, a family holiday in Phuket, a week for Q and I in Bangkok, culminating in a day at the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford. Phew! As I start writing this I have yet to think about how I'll cover all this, it may even require two posts, we crammed so much in. Q and I attended the Idler festival , starting with an overnight stay in a small hotel in Hampstead, before meeting up with our Idler friends on Friday.  Unexpectedly, we had an impromptu evening meal with son #2 and his Costa Rican gf.  This was excellent and a chance for Q and S to spend time together again. In a few days, we'll be off to Thailand together. After the meal, we bumped into some of our Idler friends who'd popped into the pub for a drink. There Is A War Going On

There is a war going on. I can't seem to find a way to write about it in language that I feel comfortable with. It either comes out as a load of (ultimately meaningless) metaphors, cliches and over worn phrases or else it's just way too personal.  Stuff there is no one i can talk to about. At the moment. Or maybe ever could be. This has prevented me writing a post for several days. Day to day it can be a struggle: I have worked out that except when I am asleep or I am so overwhelmed with work that it consumes every spare cycle my brain has at its disposal (and even then "it" manages, on occasion, to hijack a thread that's not fully utilised)... only at those times can I be assured of any kind of peace. And I don't want work to have that power. Been there. Done that. Have no desire to go back there again. So it is with music that freedom comes. Not always. Clichés. Slipping into  cliché mode is effortless, almost unconscious. My first instinct was to begin by writing 'I can't believe it's already July'. I pulled back from that by reminding myself that life is lived in seconds, minutes, hours and days.  The calendar is a human construct, though a very convenient one, especially if you want to ensure you and others arrive in the same place and at the same time.  Seasons, night and day are the true basis of everything we experience. That's how we live. What's my point? Do I have one? It simply boils down to another  cliché: be present in the moment.  Life is now, not tomorrow next week or next year.  This is it.  This needs further exploration, and I need to think more deeply before I write more on the subject.
