Love, Poetry and Revolution - Tuesday 4th April 2023

Another day of sunshine, though we had a slower start.

First stop Tintagel.  What a place, I do love the North Atlantic coast: the waves, the rocks and the sounds.

After an interesting tour of the site and many photo opportunities with the man, the myth and the legend, we headed for Boscastle.

Boscastle was also an interesting visit, culminating in Fish and Chips at Sharon's plaice, before the drive home on the coastal route.

The day culminated in a round of games, joined by an internet guest. 

Another fantastic and fun day thanks to our kind and generous host.

Next week would have been E's birthday. Her first birthday since she died. Every day is the birthday of millions of people, living and dead. I'm wrestling with how to commemorate this day.  The date is still the day of her birth; however, she is not physically here to have her birthday celebrated. If someone is no longer here, should you celebrate their birthday? In remembering, we are commemorating.  It's not something that can be forgotten (not that I want to), not this close to her death, but perhaps it's about how I and our sons and her brother feel inside. For me, it feels wrong to celebrate the day, especially now. As her illness progressed, each birthday had less and less to celebrate. We always marked the day. More or less, even though it became impossible to do the things we would have done, since E couldn't leave the house. Dreadzone at SUB89 in Reading Friday 7th April 2017

Back to SUB89 and also to Dreadzone after a semi-enforced break, on a Friday night and accompanied by my sons - "Dreadzone virgins" in the words of MC Spee: sounds like the setting for a great night out... ...and so it proved to be! There was no support act though Greg Dread (Greg Roberts, drummer) played a DJ set prior to Dreadzone taking to the stage - a gentle warm up for what was to follow.  The band took to the stage to cheers and applause and launched straight into 'Rootsman' from the new album, a great reggae-based opener that led neatly into MC Spee's intro for 'Return of the Dread' - and already the "bouncing crew" was in full sway. Dreadzone are a joyous band live - it's impossible not to dance - and I for one had a grin from ear to ear whilst dancing for the entire two hour set. For about a week, maybe more, I've had a cold.  It's one of those colds that refuses to go quickly. I have shared it widely, unintentionally, though of course, I may not be the source of all the colds, there are so many about. I'm not here to write about my cold, though. It's a lead-in to something more pernicious. Accompanying the cold, especially as it slowly fades, I've had a bad headache. Initially, I thought it was cold-related, but I've come to believe it's a physical manifestation of stress - a topic that opens a crate of cans of worms. The stress I'm experiencing is probably the result of several things I'm anxious about. I had considered listing the things I thought were at the root of it, and then deciding whether they belong in the category of things I can control or cannot control. Tales From The Crypt - Wednesday 7th September 2022

Quite a few things to do today, though primarily work. Started my day with a walk, during which I caught up with Q. Once home, time to get changed and settle down to work. Countdown. What happened today that didn't involve work?  Apart from Q-communications, we had a brief visit from the community matron to check E's skin for pressure sores and a slightly longer visit from someone from the council to discuss NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) funding. The CHC discussion went well and took less time than anticipated. I will probably hear more in the week commencing the 19th of September. Down the rabbit hole again? I made dinner with son #3 and then watched the end of the Hawkwind at Stonehenge concert/documentary.  It was interesting to watch, though the image and sound quality were not great.  It certainly wasn't the best Hawkwind gig ever but as a document of the period, it worked.  It was also good to see Nik Turner and Dave Brock share a stage, though there was a di...

After a long period of stasis, I have just completed the first step in changing our house and garden to meet the needs of us all.  The first step is converting our garden into a usable space for socialising and hosting gatherings (maybe with food if guests are lucky!) I'm on the verge of starting a project to convert our garage into a combined music room, library, and guest bedroom. It's long been a dream of mine to have a library and a music room, and this dream is now almost a reality.   You might ask why I didn't start this sooner? The overarching reason is that being E's carer, with all that entailed, it was almost impossible (for a long time) to muster the energy or positivity needed to make such big changes. Not only that, some of these changes would have been impossible whilst E was in her hospital bed.
