Love, Poetry and Revolution - Tuesday 4th April 2023

Another day of sunshine, though we had a slower start.

First stop Tintagel.  What a place, I do love the North Atlantic coast: the waves, the rocks and the sounds.

After an interesting tour of the site and many photo opportunities with the man, the myth and the legend, we headed for Boscastle.

Boscastle was also an interesting visit, culminating in Fish and Chips at Sharon's plaice, before the drive home on the coastal route.

The day culminated in a round of games, joined by an internet guest. 

Another fantastic and fun day thanks to our kind and generous host.

I have been swimming deeply in the sea of life, often miles from land, and there hasn't been space to write. Have you ever tried writing whilst immersed in the sea? Much has been going on externally and internally. Getting engaged to Q in July has necessitated some early planning, starting with where and when we'll be getting married.  We have a date and a location.  Based on the date of the wedding we've booked a venue for the party.  These two dates being agreed upon, we've sent out initial invitations: this is especially important for most of Q's family as they will be travelling from a land down under, namely Australia. Most of August was taken up with this planning, mentally if not physically. The longer things stay the same, the more it seems that's the way they'll stay. No longer? Ever since returning from hospital some three years ago, and her brush with death whilst there, E's illness has followed a familiar and consistent pattern. Brief intense periods of illness (infections, seizures, that sort of thing) followed by longer periods of slow, continuous decline. Latterly she's been experiencing other symptoms, most especially bouts of pain of unknown origin.  When she's been in pain, it's often been associated with mild seizures which pass in a minute or two, with help. E is in an end-of-life care period during which comfort is the priority, which can throw up unexpected challenges. Her pain medication has been increased, but she still experiences pain at times. It's a bit of a challenge. On the one hand, we don't want her to be in pain, on the other it's hard to know how long the pain will last and we don't want to rush in and give...

"Feeling Like I'm Riding With The Four Horsemen"

Drum beat kicks, sampled string section weaves its dreamy melody in and out of focus over a lurching slow drum pattern and the mantra "It's Seven, It's Heavy, It's Heaven" leads in to the gloriously addictive hypnotic chorus. Brain hooked after four chorus repeats that gyrate and wind like a snake charmer dancer sending ripples through a smoke-filled room.  The rap begins it's roller coaster ride with phrases merging into phrases before we hit the chorus running again and back to the dancer's sinuous moves. A melancholy fadeout as the rap and strings hit the wall...exhale. Shabazz Palaces look at America ("Amurderca" in Quazarz-speak) through an alien lens on their pair of albums - 'Quazarz: Born On A Gangster Star' and 'Quazarz vs. The Jealous Machines' - both released on the 14th July is a breath of fresh air, a singular rap vision to be celebrated.

World Shut Your Mouth

A lot of people seem to go to gigs to hear the headline act, but nothing more (not to mention those who don't seem to go to hear the music at all?)  I'm  always keen to hear the support, especially if I've never heard of them as you never know what you'll find. And so I found myself at the front of the stage in SUB89 waiting for Tom Hickox to take to the stage. Never heard of him or heard anything by him, so looking forward to hear what he does. As the hour of 8pm arrived, he took to the stage and seated himself behind a large electric piano, joined by Sam Grimley on various guitars. From his opening number, I was struck by his voice - he really has presence on stage. For the first song or two I just thought, 'yeah, he sounds OK, but...', and wasn't really drawn in. A couple of songs had great stories behind them, and his spoken intros to 'The Lisbon Maru' and 'The Dubbing Artist' were intriguing.  The song that really land...

June is underway and my bonce is still not back to normal.  I'm getting there, but one of the current drawbacks is that I need a lot of sleep. Don't get me wrong, it's feeling way better, I'd just hoped it would be as before by now.  Apart from pain, which I'm ignoring from now on, my emotions are out of control.  Probably a combination of lack of suppression now I'm drug-free and the aftershocks of February's event. Naively, I had assumed that the years of loss and grieving for that loss, alongside the therapy and counselling, would have made the final process easier.  I now feel that that was unrealistic.  Grief is a powerful emotion, and there are no straightforward laws or rules that govern how an individual might experience it.  That'll learn ya. Never content to deal with one major problem at a time, I've also been experiencing worse back pain (with consequences for my stability/balance).  I have seen a physio about it.   On the one han...
