Lockdown Diary - Monday 14th June 2021

Didn't walk first thing as I'm doing a longer walk later, with friends.

Some important admin stuff out of the way, time to get organised for the walk.

I'm suntan-lotioned, have water, hat, walking trousers (borrowed) and an address to enter into the satnav. Off we go!

Back from a great walk with friends, culminating in lunch at the West Berkshire brewery.  The walk took in different landscapes across the North Wessex Downs AONB, which was abundantly green and verdant. Getting out in the fresh air in this sort of weather is a great boost whilst in the moment.

Sons 1 and 2 have been to the funeral of a friend this afternoon, something both sad and wrong, but given the circumstances I can say nothing more here, other than it is deeply troubling.  We have spoken of it before and again this afternoon and I have comforted them, but am disturbed by it too.

After a call with a friend son #3 and I make dinner: baked haddock with parmesan and various vegetables.  It transpires that son #2 is having another virtual date night with his gf, which means the rest of us watch football, again. FFS!

After that, the usual wind down leading to sleep.

[Just so you know, this has been written with the help of voice-to-text typing, so please excuse any mistakes! OK, here we go] Hello, it’s been a while since I’ve written anything here, but I’m about to change that. So here is my first blog post after major brain surgery to remove a tumour (a meningioma, to be precise) from the right side of my head, and I was lucky enough - I think that’s the right phrase - to have a stroke, which affects the left side of my body. A full set. I am recovering slowly in Liverpool with the help of Q, who is now – as of the 18 th of August – my wife. I left hospital (the RBH) with Q on September 18 th and have been living in Liverpool ever since.  I now have carers three times a day, except at weekends, when once a day in the morning will suffice.  I will close this blog by saying that I am in recovery, and I hope to write more when I next get a chance. Tales From The Crypt - Tuesday 8th November 2022

We're both working today, though Q is in her office whilst I'm at home and have monopolised the dining room table with two laptops and a monitor. During my first call at 9, my project manager remarked "you have a different background", to which I responded, "I'm in Liverpool", and there that exchange rested. Usual rules apply for today, so very little to say...probably. I'm only working for two days this week, so I'm halfway there at the end of today. Q came home for lunch and we assembled the bed in the newly emptied front bedroom, ready for her mum's arrival from Australia tomorrow morning. My final work meeting of the day went on until later than expected, Q arrived home and I was still working for at least another 30 minutes. After dinner, I chatted with son #1 for a bit for an update on E and also how he is faring with his university assignment. It's strange how words or phrases that you consider to be commonplace or part of a shared language don't always transfer to your children. After I showered this morning, son #3 was also going to take a shower. In jest, I said I was "done but not brown", which I thought was a good "off-the-cuff" pun. He didn't understand the pun, and so I had to explain (never the best way with puns or jokes) that "dun" is a shade of brown (greyish brown, officially), as used in the phrase "the dun cow". There are lots of pubs called "The Dun Cow" (look it up). There are als myths about them/it. Oh, well. Never mind. Whilst I was out walking, I was musing on this incident amongst other things and thought, 'I guess it's a bit like me reading Shakespeare and not understanding some of the phrases'. Like the line, "...Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou, Romeo..." which many people believe (myself included, until I dug deeper) ...

Lockdown Diary - Wednesday 2nd September 2020

Very hectic start to the day, got up early to get everything set up for yoga at 7, and did some preparation for breakfast afterwards.  Did yoga but left early at 7:35 in order to get showered, dressed and make breakfast by 8 a.m. - rushing about the house up and down stairs setting porridge cooking whilst cleaning my teeth upstairs in parallel. Somehow I managed to get all this done with three minutes to spare, which I thought was good going. Had to skip press ups and weights - will do those in my lunch break, all being well.  Who says you have to slow down when you get older?   (The course is being presented by someone in Italy, so when we take lunch break, it hasn't reached lunch time in the UK! Mind you, all the other attendees are in India, some five and a half hours ahead, so when we finish around 5pm, it's 10:30 p.m. for them!) Who says you have to slow down when you get older? Tales From The Crypt - Monday 13th December 2021

Today I'm heading off to Birmingham University to collect son #1, leaving as close to 9 a.m. as I can.  The intention is to get there and come straight back, or as close to that as his readiness allows. Almost as soon as I get back I'm taking sons 1 and 2 to the dentist - no peace for the wicked. Back from Brum and straight out again! It's now 3 p.m. and finally I'm home and very hungry, time for lunch at last! The afternoon disappeared in a series of discussions and changes of plan. I don't seem to have managed to progress any of the Christmas things I need to get done, but never mind. Spoke to the hospital for an update on my mother-in-law, but so far no real change.
