Love, Poetry and Revolution - Tuesday 2nd May 2023

I started work today with some trepidation. My contract was due to be renewed on Monday, in theory. Every time this has happened before, I have lost my access from anything ranging from a few hours to a week.  I have been warning everyone for last couple of weeks to make sure it's all set up, but...

At some ungodly hour son #2 and his gf headed off to London to get a Eurostar to Paris, this all happened whilst I was still asleep, but I'm sure I'll get progress updates during the day.

Surprise, surprise. I've lost my access...again.

It's been a frustrating, but quiet day. No sons are home for the entire day, which is quite unusual.

I made dinner early and got myself completely up to date with MAFSA until the final one next week.  In between the two I watched this evening, I finished reading 'Oxen of the Sun'.  It occurred to me that some of the scenes are redolent of 'Carry On Nurse', even if they are couched in less transparent terms. It's a very difficult episode, probably one which readers either skip or give up on, if they've made it this far.  There are jokes, there's a lot of drinking and the birth of a baby (after Mina Purefoy has been in labour for three days!)  I'd like to write something a little more in-depth, but...I don't have the time.

Heading for bed now and a call with Q, to see what's been happening elsewhere.

It's been a while since my last post, longer than I anticipated when I decided I didn't need to post daily. Since then, which was a little over a week ago, a lot has happened though quite a lot of it can't appear here. Work has been especially busy as my work on the project is coming to an end.  Unusually, design uncertainties are increasing rather than decreasing as things wind down, which means I am doubly busy with new stuff as well as trying to ensure I wrap up and tidy all my documentation. There's been lots of monitoring activity keeping me busy while I get to grips with the joys of SDR.  It's opened up a world of possibilities that inevitably come with new challenges including the need for better antenna or better-sited (higher, outdoor) antenna and RF filters on top of the RF amplifiers I've also required. Lockdown Diary - Tuesday 31st March 2020

First working day of the week for me, at least.   I've been fairly busy, so this won't be much of a diary entry. Keeping up with the 'Wake, got in touch with a couple for friends online and arranged a call with one tomorrow.  Written a brief letter to another, 'cos that's what it's all about at the moment - communications. Work continues to present challenges and things could change quite dramatically over the next couple of weeks, but for now I carry on as normal. Yet again, work has filled my day and I haven't managed to take a break outside, but tomorrow and for the rest of the week I intend to put in a thirty minute slot to go out, walk and get some fresh air.  I have at least managed to keep up my daily 20-minute meditation, which is something, though not a substitute for exercise and fresh air. The day has been rounded off with a takeaway from our local Italian restaurant - makes a change from cooking, and no social interaction closer than 2...

Tales From The Crypt - Monday 21st February 2022

Up early to head home after an unexpected additional overnight stay. Work starts at 9 for some, so I need to leave before then, but first we need breakfast and I need to re-pack.  It's still very windy, but at least dry, but there's one more job still to do: an examination of the roof front and back to see if we can spot where the two slates that have blown down originated. Spotting where the slates have come from is not as easy as we might have hoped and my time is running out. I need to get ready to head northwards on what I imagine will be a lively journey, given that the wind is already picking up and the gusts are getting stronger. Home before 10:30 and time to get back into the things that need doing here. Late afternoon I finally have time to read the papers for the first time in quite a while.  Finished reading the papers, time to clean the oven ahead of the engineer's visit tomorrow! This week I have mostly been listening to....

I’ve been listening to ‘Trout Mask Replica’ by Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band’s for the past couple of days. Although it’s one of my favourite albums, certainly a desert island candidate, I’ve actually been listening to a new release of the album issued from the record label set up by Frank Zappa’s estate. Why a new release?   Is it a multi-disc release with lavish notes, out-takes, demo versions, recordings of the musicians asleep and imagining how to arrange ‘Veteran’s Day Poppy’? No, none of the above; it is a single CD release of the original album. What’s special is that it’s an almost completely re-mastered version of the album, taken from different set of source tapes which, in the most part, have not suffered from the oxide loss and deterioration of the Warner Brothers master. Tales From The Crypt - Thursday 7th October 2021

As you may have noticed there have been no posts since Sunday, primarily because I've been away getting some necessary respite, my first since August 2019.  I had thought I might write something whilst I was away - I took a laptop - but in the event I needed total escape and couldn't summon the motivation to start a laptop. This post will therefore be a catch-up, albeit a very limited and summarised one. In fact that is the summary: events have taken a turn such that I've driven for four and half hours and am now waiting for an emergency ambulance to arrive to take my wife (accompanied by me) to hospital.  Luckily I managed to enlist the help of the Community Matron and we now know that my wife is suffering from sepsis and needs to be on a IV drip for both antibiotics and saline.
