Tales From The Crypt - Saturday 19th February 2022

Up early-ish after a night's sleep undisturbed by brain problems, which is good. I'm re-packing the stuff I had packed last night, and plan to head south as soon as I have everything in order for the day.

I'm ready and will be leaving shortly...

...and now, as if by magic, I am on the south coast, and miracle of miracles, the M27 is unexpectedly open. I can hardly believe my eyes. My journey down, especially to the north of Basingstoke has passed lots of tree damage, though nothing like that after the storms of 1987, for those who can remember that far back.

I'm now safely on the south coast and try and switch my head into life number 2, beginning with lunch and 'Trigger Point', followed by a shopping trip once the weather had died down a little.

After a Christmas-style roast turkey dinner, we settle down to watch the film 'Argo', which we were too tired to watch to the end. 

Sleep, repeat...

Dreadzone at SUB89 in Reading Friday 7th April 2017

Back to SUB89 and also to Dreadzone after a semi-enforced break, on a Friday night and accompanied by my sons - "Dreadzone virgins" in the words of MC Spee: sounds like the setting for a great night out... ...and so it proved to be! There was no support act though Greg Dread (Greg Roberts, drummer) played a DJ set prior to Dreadzone taking to the stage - a gentle warm up for what was to follow.  The band took to the stage to cheers and applause and launched straight into 'Rootsman' from the new album, a great reggae-based opener that led neatly into MC Spee's intro for 'Return of the Dread' - and already the "bouncing crew" was in full sway. Dreadzone are a joyous band live - it's impossible not to dance - and I for one had a grin from ear to ear whilst dancing for the entire two hour set. Tales From The Crypt - Monday 25th April 2022

Unusually this looks like it'll turn out to be a Monday with not much to say.  It is my non-working day and my intention is to have a relaxing day for a change. There is washing to do, but it can wait. After lunch, my plans go awry as I'm feeling a little off-colour, and so instead of reading the papers I have a rest and try and complete Wordle, Quordle and Octordle, off and on. As always seems to be the way, the day evaporates and it's time to make dinner with son #3. Dinner made, we settle down to watch some of the previous series (series 12) of 'Doctor Who', starting more or less at the beginning. I have been swimming deeply in the sea of life, often miles from land, and there hasn't been space to write. Have you ever tried writing whilst immersed in the sea? Much has been going on externally and internally. Getting engaged to Q in July has necessitated some early planning, starting with where and when we'll be getting married.  We have a date and a location.  Based on the date of the wedding we've booked a venue for the party.  These two dates being agreed upon, we've sent out initial invitations: this is especially important for most of Q's family as they will be travelling from a land down under, namely Australia. Most of August was taken up with this planning, mentally if not physically. As wedding-related activities have started to crystallise, I have begun to realise that everything has been leading towards the big day next year. Destiny. Book Review: A Wizard A True Star: Todd Rundgren in the Studio by Paul Myers For a long time I resisted getting this book.   I’m always wary of books about musicians: they tend to fall into one of two camps, sycophantic fan hagiography or hatchet job. Whilst I am a huge fan of much of Mr. R’s musical output (though equally finding some his songs irritating, ultimately pointless or just plain boring) neither approach appeals to me. Persuaded by some positive reviews and the fact that the book is billed not as a straight biography, but rather as a career history focussing on Todd’s studio work, I decided to give it a go.   Happily, I was not disappointed. For about a week, maybe more, I've had a cold.  It's one of those colds that refuses to go quickly. I have shared it widely, unintentionally, though of course, I may not be the source of all the colds, there are so many about. I'm not here to write about my cold, though. It's a lead-in to something more pernicious. Accompanying the cold, especially as it slowly fades, I've had a bad headache. Initially, I thought it was cold-related, but I've come to believe it's a physical manifestation of stress - a topic that opens a crate of cans of worms. The stress I'm experiencing is probably the result of several things I'm anxious about. I had considered listing the things I thought were at the root of it, and then deciding whether they belong in the category of things I can control or cannot control.
