Love, Poetry and Revolution - Monday 10th July 2023

At the risk of this becoming a meta-blog, a big chunk of Monday was spent writing the blog post covering the Idler Festival.  In fact, part way through I decided not to write in as much detail as there was a danger I'd never finish it.

How did I spend the rest of the day?  I walked to the local deli to pick up lunch and a coffee, I read the weekend papers and a bit more of 'Faith, Hope and Carnage'.

Q came home early and we chilled before dinner and then began watching the movie of the 'Mathilda' musical on the pretext that Sindhu Vee is in it (which she is). There has already been an inordinately large amount of singing and dancing for reasons which I cannot fathom. Luckily, I have managed to find laughs several times.

We're off to bed early as we BOTH have to work tomorrow.

Drum beat kicks, sampled string section weaves its dreamy melody in and out of focus over a lurching slow drum pattern and the mantra "It's Seven, It's Heavy, It's Heaven" leads in to the gloriously addictive hypnotic chorus. Brain hooked after four chorus repeats that gyrate and wind like a snake charmer dancer sending ripples through a smoke-filled room.  The rap begins it's roller coaster ride with phrases merging into phrases before we hit the chorus running again and back to the dancer's sinuous moves. A melancholy fadeout as the rap and strings hit the wall...exhale. Shabazz Palaces look at America ("Amurderca" in Quazarz-speak) through an alien lens on their pair of albums - 'Quazarz: Born On A Gangster Star' and 'Quazarz vs. The Jealous Machines' - both released on the 14th July is a breath of fresh air, a singular rap vision to be celebrated.

Love, Poetry and Revolution - Thursday 15th May 2025

I'm back again. My head is still not back to the state which I call normality.  I'm still getting headaches daily.  I'm not sure if it's the bang on my head or SSRI withdrawal or a toxic combination of both.  Next week, I may get a chance to be investigated by my GP, if nothing has changed. In the meantime, I am competing for the record of becoming the largest consumer of paracetamol and ibuprofen. It's not ideal, but there have to be positives. Life goes on, as it must and I've a few big topics on my mind, aside from the above.  Planning for the future and deciding what that will look like is one of these topics. Thankfully, this one takes two to plan and Q and I have had several conversations as we discern a plan emerging from the fog of possibilities. Working out the layout of my new library/music room is another consideration.  The sofa-bed has been delivered and looks good. I have been swimming deeply in the sea of life, often miles from land, and there hasn't been space to write. Have you ever tried writing whilst immersed in the sea? Much has been going on externally and internally. Getting engaged to Q in July has necessitated some early planning, starting with where and when we'll be getting married.  We have a date and a location.  Based on the date of the wedding we've booked a venue for the party.  These two dates being agreed upon, we've sent out initial invitations: this is especially important for most of Q's family as they will be travelling from a land down under, namely Australia. Most of August was taken up with this planning, mentally if not physically. As wedding-related activities have started to crystallise, I have begun to realise that everything has been leading towards the big day next year. Destiny. World Shut Your Mouth

A lot of people seem to go to gigs to hear the headline act, but nothing more (not to mention those who don't seem to go to hear the music at all?)  I'm  always keen to hear the support, especially if I've never heard of them as you never know what you'll find. And so I found myself at the front of the stage in SUB89 waiting for Tom Hickox to take to the stage. Never heard of him or heard anything by him, so looking forward to hear what he does. As the hour of 8pm arrived, he took to the stage and seated himself behind a large electric piano, joined by Sam Grimley on various guitars. From his opening number, I was struck by his voice - he really has presence on stage. For the first song or two I just thought, 'yeah, he sounds OK, but...', and wasn't really drawn in. A couple of songs had great stories behind them, and his spoken intros to 'The Lisbon Maru' and 'The Dubbing Artist' were intriguing.  The song that really land...

Love, Poetry and Revolution - Tuesday 3rd June 2025

June is underway and my bonce is still not back to normal.  I'm getting there, but one of the current drawbacks is that I need a lot of sleep. Don't get me wrong, it's feeling way better, I'd just hoped it would be as before by now.  Apart from pain, which I'm ignoring from now on, my emotions are out of control.  Probably a combination of lack of suppression now I'm drug-free and the aftershocks of February's event. Naively, I had assumed that the years of loss and grieving for that loss, alongside the therapy and counselling, would have made the final process easier.  I now feel that that was unrealistic.  Grief is a powerful emotion, and there are no straightforward laws or rules that govern how an individual might experience it.  That'll learn ya. Never content to deal with one major problem at a time, I've also been experiencing worse back pain (with consequences for my stability/balance).  I have seen a physio about it.   On the one han...
