Love, Poetry and Revolution - Monday 10th July 2023

At the risk of this becoming a meta-blog, a big chunk of Monday was spent writing the blog post covering the Idler Festival.  In fact, part way through I decided not to write in as much detail as there was a danger I'd never finish it.

How did I spend the rest of the day?  I walked to the local deli to pick up lunch and a coffee, I read the weekend papers and a bit more of 'Faith, Hope and Carnage'.

Q came home early and we chilled before dinner and then began watching the movie of the 'Mathilda' musical on the pretext that Sindhu Vee is in it (which she is). There has already been an inordinately large amount of singing and dancing for reasons which I cannot fathom. Luckily, I have managed to find laughs several times.

We're off to bed early as we BOTH have to work tomorrow.

Lockdown Diary - Tuesday 12th January 2021

Work today with the added excitement of a trip to the doctor's surgery to liven it up a bit. Work is busy at the moment, though I'm finding it quite interesting as I'm having to learning about and understand all my client's systems - what they do, how they fit together etc - and as it's a retailer I can also relate what happens in the real world with what happens in the systems as a consequence. It's very complex, which adds to the interest. I get a great deal of pleasure from understanding complexity, especially where you can relate the real world, macro level view to the micro level.  It's why I enjoy meteorology, it's why I enjoyed being an IBM Mainframe systems programmer and Assembler programming, why I liked debugging and tuning CICS systems and, in a non-work sense, why I find 'Finnegans Wake' endlessly enjoyable and fascinating. Lockdown Diary - New Year's Day (Friday 1st January 2021)

I awake to 2021. No hangover, though I've slept in as I didn't get to sleep until about 2 a.m. or thereabouts. I can't honestly say that I'm feeling that positive, after all it's just another day and nothing changes from yesterday except the date.  We are also no longer in the EU which casts a dark shadow over the coming years, a shadow which will not be lifted any time soon.  Something I need to get engaged in and see what can be done. For a change I get showered and dressed after the second carer call of the day, so I don't end up having breakfast until a little before 11 a.m. - unheard of! I shall probably burn in hell for this indulgence 😂🤣😂 My original plan for the day was that we'd all eat together mid-afternoon, a bit like on Christmas Day, however the non-appearance of sons 1 and 2 until the time when the sun was heading for the western horizon put paid to that idea.  I am remarkably chilled about this, my flexibility and adaptability honed by yea...

Tales From The Crypt - Monday 26th September 2022

Things get serious. We have a day of packing and other house-move-related activities ahead of us. After breakfast, the tasks began...but before I'd got much done, the phone rang and it was son #1 with some good news from his university. We're both really pleased for him and it's a great start to the day.  Back to work... I'm in the process of testing all the radiators and bleeding those that need it, whilst also helping Q suck the air out of vacuum bags of bedding etc. Having completed a load of tasks off today's list we settled down to get some computer-based admin done, including booking COVID booster jabs for tomorrow.  Time for lunch. Whilst eating lunch things became very busy : Q had to go on a Zoom call with her new employer; the handyman arrived to fix a couple of things; and, Nick Cave also arrived.  (In the form of 'Faith, Hope and Carnage')  Things settled down again and I decided to go and meditate, something I've missed for the past few days...

Lockdown Diary - New Year's Eve (Thursday 31st December 2020)

Last night I decided that I would have a lie-in until 8 a.m. today: I'd even gone to the trouble of asking the temporary first carer of the day to let herself in. Of course this was a fatal mistake. When I came downstairs I noticed the door to my wife's 'bedroom' (not sure why I've put that in quotes: it IS her bedroom though it WAS once our dining room/library) is closed and from behind the door I hear a regular bleeping sound.  I recognise the bleeping. It is the sound of the feeding pump indicating it is not happy.  In I trot to take a look and see that the display says, 'Feed Empty'. One look shows this is not actually the case. On closer inspection I can see the problem.  The 'giving set' - which is what the pipework is known as, has air in it. It looks to me as if it's not been primed properly - 'priming' being the, theoretically, automatic process whereby the pump pushes feed to the end of the tube and pushes the air out, ready to ...

Lockdown Diary - Thursday 21st January 2021

More of the same today: very busy at work, so will not have much time to write until later. Lots and lots of lovely work, until the early evening when it's time for the idler drinks Zoom session.  Tonight's guest speaker is Jaron Lanier, who is described on Wikipedia as 'an American computer philosophy writer, computer scientist, visual artist, and composer of contemporary classical music. Considered a founder of the field of virtual reality...', and also a critic of social media, especially of Facebook and YouTube. Another incredibly thought-provoking session, which was attended by around 500 people at the peak, with Jaron talking widely on a variety of topics including, social media, ownership of personal data, access to creative works (music, art, literature etc), bitcoin, blockchain and GDPR, to name but a few.  I'm sure I've said it before, but these weekly discussions have been one of the highlights of lockdown and a major contributor to my sanity.
