Love, Poetry and Revolution - Thursday 13th July 2023

It's going to be another busy day at work with the usual potential consequences on this post.

Mid-afternoon, prior to making my second coffee of the day, I had an urge for chocolate.  As the shop is only a few minutes up the road, I decided to go for it and buy a stash to last at least until tomorrow. Just in case. (Who he?)  Joy and delight all around.

Back to work. 

Q returned home later than in previous days: she's been at the city's Catholic cathedral attending the inauguration of the new Vice-Chancellor. 

Dinner. Conversation. TS gig/ticket chatter. The day comes to a close.

I could write a lot today, but I am not planning to.  Why am I bothering to write at all, you may ask?  Purely because of the date.  The twenty-ninth of February only comes every four years (yes, I know there are exceptions to that rule - I have written code to deal with that in the past), when it's a leap year.  I feel, for no apparent reason, I should mark this day with some words. It's starting to look a lot like E's decline has plateaued and we (the Sue Ryder nurse, maybe GP) may well decide to change the way medication is delivered.  We'll not stop giving her medication to reduce the likelihood of seizures, nor will we stop the pain-relief medication because I think everyone that knows agrees there is no turning back from that. Respite.  That's what I need, though as yet it's not easy to arrange. Maybe that will become a possibility next week. Lockdown Diary - New Year's Eve (Thursday 31st December 2020)

Last night I decided that I would have a lie-in until 8 a.m. today: I'd even gone to the trouble of asking the temporary first carer of the day to let herself in. Of course this was a fatal mistake. When I came downstairs I noticed the door to my wife's 'bedroom' (not sure why I've put that in quotes: it IS her bedroom though it WAS once our dining room/library) is closed and from behind the door I hear a regular bleeping sound.  I recognise the bleeping. It is the sound of the feeding pump indicating it is not happy.  In I trot to take a look and see that the display says, 'Feed Empty'. One look shows this is not actually the case. On closer inspection I can see the problem.  The 'giving set' - which is what the pipework is known as, has air in it. It looks to me as if it's not been primed properly - 'priming' being the, theoretically, automatic process whereby the pump pushes feed to the end of the tube and pushes the air out, ready to ...

Love, Poetry and Revolution - Monday 12th February 2024

After eighteen months of stability, it's been a while since the focus of these posts has been E, though that hasn't been the case in real life, of course. This past week has been very troubling with the onset of seemingly regular small seizures.  From our perspective we've been struggling to know if E's in pain and/or suffering discomfort, but increasingly there have been signs that she is. This morning I called the District Nurses to explain my concerns.  Whilst the nurse was here, E had several mini-seizures, and the nurse saw these and validated what I've been seeing. E needed pain killer and relaxant and she seems more settled, though there are still signs of seizures even with the medication. The nurse is going to contact both the Sue Ryder nurse and the GP, so I guess we'll have to wait to see what the next steps are. Lockdown Diary - Tuesday 13th October 2020

Back to work! There are a whole host of deliveries due today, from feed supplies for my wife, a book for my son at uni and birthday presents for the twins. I'm also due at the GP surgery for a flu jab at 11:16 precisely! Not only that but 'our' electrician is coming to replace the two extractor fans in the bathrooms: the one in the en-suite is dead and, given both are over 27 years old, I thought it best to replace that one before it dies too. I'm hoping there's not too much non-electrical work to do, as he's not  big fan (!) of that. The electrician arrived at around 9:30, just after the morning carers started their tasks, so it was all a bit hectic with coming and goings through the front door whilst the carers were washing my wife's hair in bed. My wife's bedroom is directly opposite the front door and the bathroom they use is by the door, so it was all a little fraught 'til the electrician had got all his tools and stuff in. Love, Poetry and Revolution - Thursday 6th November 2025

Next week would have been E's birthday. Her first birthday since she died. Every day is the birthday of millions of people, living and dead. I'm wrestling with how to commemorate this day.  The date is still the day of her birth; however, she is not physically here to have her birthday celebrated. If someone is no longer here, should you celebrate their birthday? In remembering, we are commemorating.  It's not something that can be forgotten (not that I want to), not this close to her death, but perhaps it's about how I and our sons and her brother feel inside. For me, it feels wrong to celebrate the day, especially now. As her illness progressed, each birthday had less and less to celebrate. We always marked the day. More or less, even though it became impossible to do the things we would have done, since E couldn't leave the house.
