Love, Poetry and Revolution - Sunday 16th July 2023

I'm planning a very chilled day, aiming to get a few admin and routine tasks done, but my primary focus will be watching the Royal International Air Tattoo air display at RAF Fairford live on PlanesTV.

I won't bore you with details of the air display, but here's a brief summary to whet your appetite. There were planes. Lot's of them.

I currently am currently in the midst of a moratorium on book purchases (I've even avoided entering a bookshop in Belsize Park, though I was invited to do so!), however I couldn't resist buying the book whose cover is below.

It's just been published in paperback, and is a history of the music press.  As someone brought up on the music weeklies, especially the NME, this will be fascinating reading. For many years from the 1970s through to the mid-/end-of the 1990s it was essential reading for any music fan. At its best it was challenging, provocative, politically charged, sometimes pretentious, but often a source of new ideas to investigate, occasionally beyond the world of music.  The book covers the music press as a whole, not just the UK, and I'm hoping it will be an equally fascinating read as the NME, Sounds, MM etc were before their demise.

What I'd really like to see is the publication of some of the best journalism from the NME, with photos, but without the detachable black ink, or failing that, an online archive of the same.  Someone ought to do something similar for ZigZag too, that was a really cool mag.

We all ate dinner together and watched the last episode of 'Black Ops'. An enjoyably funny, if implausible (?) series, that ended in a way that allowed for that to be it, but equally left enough dangling threads for there to be a second series.

Bed beckons, but no sleep before a chat with Q, naturally.

Queens Of The Stone Age /  'Go With The Flow'  / 'Songs For The Deaf'

[[My music listening keeps getting drawn back to QOTSA, and here we have another older one.]]
