Tales From The Crypt - Thursday 4th August 2022

Today looks like it will be one of those mundane, nothing-out-of-the-ordinary days.

I guess our 'nothing-out-of-the-ordinary' might qualify as exceptional in some lives, but we have become used to chaos and uncertainty.

I'm still feeling very tired and seem to wake up feeling tired and go through the whole day feeling tired. It's been suggested that a return to something approximating my old pre-end-of-life for E (?) routine would help. Guess I will soon see as I am due to return to work next week provided nothing untoward happens.

The most notable thing today is a plan for Sunday that is gradually turning from a possibility into something highly likely.

Change is the order of life.

I have an enormous backlog of music to listen to and things are aligned in such a way that I feel able to listen to a few new albums tonight before making dinner.

My usual bedtime routine leads to sleep of some sort, hopefully.

Some of my favourite things in December are the best of the year lists in the music magazines (and also best books of the year, but that's for another blog), mainly to discover things I may have missed -  those hidden gems that passed you by first time around. Thus far, I've seen best of lists from Rough Trade, Uncut, Louder Than War, Shindig!, Mojo, Prog and Record Collector with The Guardian, Wire, NME and maybe a few others still to come. Much as I love these lists they do challenge me - despite all the albums I have  already heard this year - there's always a shed load of albums I must listen to or dip in to, otherwise how will Santa know what to bring me on Christmas Day? Spotify and Me

[This was prompted by an article in the Guardian on 5th October 2018 - see link at the end] First off, I confess: I am a fully paid up Spotify user. I do probably use it in a slightly unusual way – for me it’s mostly a “try before you buy” thing (If I like an album (or song) on Spotify I buy the CD or the digital download: I want the person who made the album I like to be paid for creating it), though, just to be clear I do have playlists as well, including my master random playlist of favourites optimistically titled “Dead”. Nevertheless, I know Spotify is evil. Or at least the beguiling handiwork of one of Satan’s demons. It unfairly favours those artists who sell albums by the (digital) shedload, worse, it practically shoves them down your throat. Lockdown Diary - Thursday 15th April 2021

Feels like I've been in lockdown for ever, and every time things ease, what I can do seems to be even more restricted.  Like now.   I haven't got much to say as not much has happened.  Read a fair bit: started reading both 'Medical Grade Music' (by Steve Davis (yep! him, the snooker bloke) and Kavus Torabi) and 'Jolly Lad' (John Doran, of 'The Quietus' fame's autobiography.) Spent a couple of hours on the phone to my mate in Berlin, putting the world to rights. As the day progressed the carers noticed that my wife's cough, which she always has for reasons I'll not go into at this time, was sounding different, maybe a little more chesty. I listened and agreed that it did sound so not long after they left for the final call I emailed the community matron asking if she had time to pop in and check my wife over tomorrow. Once upon a time there was, so there is still Loving of a kind that rhymed here until Doors began to close, and love was left screaming When life was diagnosed by the doctors of dreaming A typical Monday with walking and yoga, followed by a period of time chasing plumbers to get quotes to repair/upgrade our en-suite and also re-do our main bathroom.  As is customary, it seems, I only get through to voicemails.  Will they call me back?  Do pigs fly? We shall see... As a reward for the tedious process of tracking down and calling potentially good plumbers I decide it's about time I booked my first flying lesson. Walk to the edge, sir. Fall forwards and flap your arms vigorously. Nope not that sort. Powered flight. With an engine. Propeller. And wings, etc. I call operations at the flying club and the phone is answered by a friendly female voice, who wants to take down my particulars. I reply, 'That's very kind, but I'm here to book a flying lesson!' That hurdle succes...

Lockdown Diary - Wednesday 16th September 2020

Work again today, but today's early start was to do yoga at 7 a.m., rather than to start a training course. After that, though, work has dominated the day, so there's not a lot to say, just the usual trials and tribulations of work. After making and receiving several phone calls during the day son #3 established that he'd had a meningitis injection back in 2016 and doesn't need another before heading off to uni, so a visit to the doctor (isn't there a song with that title by Dr. Feelgood?) was avoided. Limiting my thinking to the moment is holding up, so far, and seems to be helping.   A friend is popping over around 6 p.m. for a walk to the pub for a drink and a chat.  I finished work around 5:30 p.m. and am ready to go! The friend duly arrived and we walked, in a socially-distanced way, to the pub.
