Love, Poetry and Revolution - Saturday 10th March 2023

I started the day with a shopping trip to get stuff for the journey to Liverpool and some goodies for son #1 whilst I'm away.

After shopping I returned to get some chores done and finish off packing. I don't have to rush, just take it easy and set off when I'm ready.

...and I'm off!

Now I'm in Liverpool. Just like that!

I set off in sunshine and arrived in cold rain.  Q and I sat and watched the final two episodes of 'Come Dine With Me', which made us both laugh. Mid-episode we had a bit of a break whilst Q started cooking tonight's dinner (a beef ragu) (slow cooking) and then finished the off.

After a really enjoyable dinner, accompanied by some incredibly good red wine, we started watching 'Gold'.  Two episodes in, we're hooked.  Really good to see Hugh Bonneville in a serious role - great acting.

The day draws to a close. Calls are unnecessary.

Thursday begins early as usual, but with the added excitement of a visit to the nurse for a blood test, primarily, as I understand it, to check if I have a vitamin B12, iron, or folic acid deficiency. (I know I don't have an iron deficiency as I'll be using it on some jeans (genes?) later. Sorry. I'll get my coat) Blood bottled up and ready to go off to the lab, I head for home and work, via the essential coffee stop. It's a very busy day for meetings at work and consequently the usual applies. I am due to be heading off for the south coast this evening, after the Idler drinks with Professor David Nutt talking about the 'real science of cannabis and health'. Mid-afternoon it looks as if our plans for the weekend are in doubt.  I await news with anticipation and have already formulated a plan B.  Plan A is on!  There's a slight alteration, which means I'll not be able to attend the Idler drinks tonight, so I guess I'll need to find time to watch the r...

Love, Poetry and Revolution - Monday 13th February 2023

A busy Monday ahead with a mix of chores, admin, work (on my non-working day 😇😕), course reading and TV watching. Chores are underway and a couple of vital (hush, hush things) are done. I'm finally going to sit down and watch the last one and a half episodes of 'Happy Valley'. A brief interruption when the carers make their lunchtime call, but now I've finished 'Happy Valley'.  It was a really good series with a dramatic and thought-provoking ending. To ensure that I've read episodes 2 and 5 of 'Ulysses' in time for Wednesday's seminar/discussion, I'm reading them next.  It should also give me time to research things that need it (famous last words!) Filing. That's another thing I need to do today.  So much paperwork arrives regarding E's care and supplies that no matter how much I tell myself I'll deal with it as it arrives, I don't.  It would be a good habit to develop. Tales From The Crypt - Sunday 24th October 2021

[All of this post has been written a day later] The veil of night remains drawn...until a trip out into the fresh sea air for breakfast of eggs and smoked salmon and a walk along the sea front.  I do like being by the sea, no matter how bad the weather, though today there is broken sunlight, at least to begin with. Time passes pleasantly. Proximity. Alignment. Emergent roadmap.  Early evening I set off for home, with son #2 not feeling well and sounding pretty rough on the phone.  I'm home before 7 p.m. and begin to sort things out around the house after checking in with son #2.  He's had a cold for weeks and weeks and is feeling sick and headache-y, and I think he should see a doctor. I make myself cheese on toast while he sleeps / rests, as he doesn't want anything to eat at the moment, and sit down to watch some of a  documentary about Gil Scott-Heron's masterpiece album, 'Pieces Of A Man'. Lockdown Diary - Tuesday 10th November 2020

Back to earth with a bump. Work today, so I probably won't have much to say, which, all things considered, is probably just as well. Mid-morning, whilst working, I was interrupted by the sound of someone entering the house, using a key - it was the nurses coming to change my wife's catheter.  I do wish they'd ring the doorbell before resorting to the key - obviously if there's no answer, use the key, otherwise it just feels like a violation. As it is, every day there's a stream of people who come and go from early morning until the evening, but they generally ring the bell and I, or one of my sons, let them in. At least that way it feels like I have some level of control and it just seems more polite - I get to invite them in, even though they are always going to come in. After lunch I walked to the nearest post office, killing two birds with one stone - getting my 30 minutes plus of brisk walking done and also returning an Amazon parcel, that needed proof of postag...

Lockdown Diary - Sunday 19th April 2020

Gonna take it slow today.  Breakfast of coffee and almond croissant. Take my time drinking the coffee, maybe make another. Not much of note today either. Did a load of jobs and chores, you know, the usual: washing; cleaning en-suite; cut my hair; trimmed my beard (weird). Also found time to read the papers, read a bit of the 'Wake and continue a dialogue with a friend that started on Saturday. I was pleased to see I got a reply from Henry Eliot, author/presenter of the 'Borges' course, to my course comments and questions. He wrote an interesting and detailed reply which did agree with my thinking on the parallels between Borges and Joyce. More research to be done, I think. For a change we decided to have a takeaway from our local Italian restaurant for dinner: it's good not to cook all the time.
