Love, Poetry and Revolution - Tuesday 14th March 2023

Back to the screens!

Work was punctuated by several heavy downpours of hail.  The weather seems very changeable, veering between sunshine, overcast skies and freezing downpours.  Winters's icy fingers still poke their way into the day.

I stopped work a little after Q returned and we set about making an early dinner. 

I had a call with son #1 whilst prepping dinner.  He's off out to Nando's with a couple of friends and it shouldn't be a late one.  He seems to be making progress on the uni work he has to do, so that's good.

MAFSAU after dinner and now I've caught up and we're both watching stuff we haven't seen. Cue more discussions.

It's getting much colder as the evening wears on and we've had even more hail.

Tomorrow will be an earlier start for Q, so we're heading to bed earlier.

Music Press End of Year Lists

Some of my favourite things in December are the best of the year lists in the music magazines (and also best books of the year, but that's for another blog), mainly to discover things I may have missed -  those hidden gems that passed you by first time around. Thus far, I've seen best of lists from Rough Trade, Uncut, Louder Than War, Shindig!, Mojo, Prog and Record Collector with The Guardian, Wire, NME and maybe a few others still to come. Much as I love these lists they do challenge me - despite all the albums I have  already heard this year - there's always a shed load of albums I must listen to or dip in to, otherwise how will Santa know what to bring me on Christmas Day? Many of these lists have particular bias in line with the magazine's focus or editorial policy: Louder Than War - white women/men with guitars/indie; Prog - pretty self-explanatory; Wire - leftfield/outer limits/anything goes; Shindig! - sounds like '60s or '70s music; and Mojo - ma...

Spotify and Me

[This was prompted by an article in the Guardian on 5th October 2018 - see link at the end] First off, I confess: I am a fully paid up Spotify user. I do probably use it in a slightly unusual way – for me it’s mostly a “try before you buy” thing (If I like an album (or song) on Spotify I buy the CD or the digital download: I want the person who made the album I like to be paid for creating it), though, just to be clear I do have playlists as well, including my master random playlist of favourites optimistically titled “Dead”. Nevertheless, I know Spotify is evil. Or at least the beguiling handiwork of one of Satan’s demons. It unfairly favours those artists who sell albums by the (digital) shedload, worse, it practically shoves them down your throat. Lockdown Diary - Thursday 15th April 2021

Feels like I've been in lockdown for ever, and every time things ease, what I can do seems to be even more restricted.  Like now.   I haven't got much to say as not much has happened.  Read a fair bit: started reading both 'Medical Grade Music' (by Steve Davis (yep! him, the snooker bloke) and Kavus Torabi) and 'Jolly Lad' (John Doran, of 'The Quietus' fame's autobiography.) Spent a couple of hours on the phone to my mate in Berlin, putting the world to rights. As the day progressed the carers noticed that my wife's cough, which she always has for reasons I'll not go into at this time, was sounding different, maybe a little more chesty. I listened and agreed that it did sound so not long after they left for the final call I emailed the community matron asking if she had time to pop in and check my wife over tomorrow. Lockdown Diary - Thursday 17th September 2020

Today's a day off in lieu of Monday last week, but sadly there's no lie-in. The cleaner will be ringing the door bell at 10 to 7, so I might as well be up and ready by then, which, of course, I am. There's a whole bunch of things I want to get done today: washing for son #3 ahead of going to uni tomorrow; remove a bunch of books and magazines from my bedroom to reduce the chance of me being crushed in my sleep by a mountain of books; walk for 30 minutes or so; get cards and present written and wrapped for our anniversary tomorrow; read the weekend paper backlog; change my bed; and, if there's any time left (!) read more of 'The Hunting Party' and start 'The Time Machine'.  Ambitious? I suspect so. By the time the lunch carers arrived one wash was done, another was under way and the book mountain was re-homed whilst the magazine backlog was mostly in the waste bins outside (not all of them - stuff from before 2020 - give or take articles I removed to read...

Lockdown Diary - Wednesday 15th July 2020

My first post since Sunday, when things began to go awry.  I don't think I'll document all the details, but suffice it to say that the pain killers I've been taking have caused severe constipation. I didn't sleep at all Sunday night and was in agony for most of Monday, culminating in a call out to the out of hours GP who gave me an injection as pain killer / anti-inflammatory. Finally after taking various remedies including one whose effects the GP described as 'like dynamite', things began to move, painfully, mid-Tuesday afternoon. Today I feel much better, though I do now have the reverse problem, but, believe me, that's much better! Compared to the pain from the two operations, the pain I experienced on Monday night was off the scale.  I stopped taking the opiate-based pain killers on Sunday and prefer the any undimmed pain to the side effects.
