Love, Poetry and Revolution - Tuesday 14th March 2023

Back to the screens!

Work was punctuated by several heavy downpours of hail.  The weather seems very changeable, veering between sunshine, overcast skies and freezing downpours.  Winters's icy fingers still poke their way into the day.

I stopped work a little after Q returned and we set about making an early dinner. 

I had a call with son #1 whilst prepping dinner.  He's off out to Nando's with a couple of friends and it shouldn't be a late one.  He seems to be making progress on the uni work he has to do, so that's good.

MAFSAU after dinner and now I've caught up and we're both watching stuff we haven't seen. Cue more discussions.

It's getting much colder as the evening wears on and we've had even more hail.

Tomorrow will be an earlier start for Q, so we're heading to bed earlier.

The final working day of my week, and it's going to be a busy one.  What sort of insane brain wiring makes me feel guilty about being on leave tomorrow so soon after being off ill? At one point I seriously thought about cancelling some of my leave in order to progress the project I'm working on.  Luckily, sanity prevailed and I turned my thinking around. It would appear that the Protestant work ethic is deeply ingrained. It's getting a bit late to fix that and I'm clearly failing my Idler entrance exam. Notwithstanding all that soul searching and hand wringing, I have work to get on with, and so today will be another day of few words. Probably. Social services interrupted my productive day to check if it was OK for E to come home tomorrow.  Swiftly followed by a call from the hospital ward admin person to confirm transport has been booked for tomorrow.  Now it just has to happen. Dreadzone at SUB89 in Reading Friday 7th April 2017

Back to SUB89 and also to Dreadzone after a semi-enforced break, on a Friday night and accompanied by my sons - "Dreadzone virgins" in the words of MC Spee: sounds like the setting for a great night out... ...and so it proved to be! There was no support act though Greg Dread (Greg Roberts, drummer) played a DJ set prior to Dreadzone taking to the stage - a gentle warm up for what was to follow.  The band took to the stage to cheers and applause and launched straight into 'Rootsman' from the new album, a great reggae-based opener that led neatly into MC Spee's intro for 'Return of the Dread' - and already the "bouncing crew" was in full sway. Dreadzone are a joyous band live - it's impossible not to dance - and I for one had a grin from ear to ear whilst dancing for the entire two hour set. I have been swimming deeply in the sea of life, often miles from land, and there hasn't been space to write. Have you ever tried writing whilst immersed in the sea? Much has been going on externally and internally. Getting engaged to Q in July has necessitated some early planning, starting with where and when we'll be getting married.  We have a date and a location.  Based on the date of the wedding we've booked a venue for the party.  These two dates being agreed upon, we've sent out initial invitations: this is especially important for most of Q's family as they will be travelling from a land down under, namely Australia. Most of August was taken up with this planning, mentally if not physically. As wedding-related activities have started to crystallise, I have begun to realise that everything has been leading towards the big day next year. Destiny. Top 10 Albums of 2019

My top 10 albums of 2019 has been a struggle.  Not because there was a shortage of candidates. Far from it.  More because of the sheer impossibility of comparing one piece of music with another, something I've become increasingly bothered by over recent years.  On any given day the albums I might get the most enjoyment from will vary according to my mood and general state of mind.  Not only that, there have been a lot of albums which almost made it into my top 10, and in a few days, if you asked me, I'd probably choose one of them, instead of one in the list (with a few exceptions). Let's also be honest, close up, any year's music is hard to assess. The albums that I'll still be playing a year from now, let alone five years time - and when I say playing, I mean playing in full (I will, of course, still listen, randomly, to tracks from these albums) - may be very different to the ones that provide the most immediate enjoyment now. Lockdown Diary - Saturday 26th June 2021

Saturday at last. Seemed a long time coming this week, dunno why. Shopping with son #2, followed by breakfast at home.  I'm off to a picnic in a park in town with some friends from book club: it's the last chance to see the couple getting married next weekend so it's an opportunity to give them a card and catch up before they depart to work and live in Denmark.   The weather is good-ish which means I've managed to get three wash loads done and hung out before I'm off out. Just returned from a very enjoyable picnic in King's Road Gardens.  In all the years I've lived here I've never been in these gardens, though I've driven past them countless times.  In the end there were seven of us in attendance, which wasn't bad for an event arranged at short notice on a Saturday afternoon.  I got home around half-four and, despite having indulged in some wine, decided I needed to go for a walk.
